About this Project

OCI Associates, Inc., was selected to provide mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design services for the relocation of the Shared Resources Group within the Tampa, FL campus of the Moffitt Cancer Research Center.

The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation, is a research-based specialty cancer center. The center has full-service outpatient and inpatient facilities and research facilities. The Tampa-based center is located at 13131 Magnolia Drive and occupies approximately 2,000,000 square feet across multiple facilities.

The project scope includes selective demolition of non-bearing walls and renovation of the first-floor (11,114 square feet), small animal vivarium, and support spaces to accommodate the programmatic requirements of the core laboratories and support spaces. The complex labs that are housed in this renovated space are Molecular Genomics, Flow Cytometry, Chemical Biology, Translational Core and Proteomics Core Laboratory. The open, flexible floor plan provides shared collaboration and break areas and has an exterior break area with pavers. Construction took place while the facility was occupied.

Extensive mechanical and electrical work of the interior and exterior spaces was executed to meet the strict requirements of the Shared Resources Group. This work includes new server additions and upgrades; strategically designed independent zones to accommodate the critical air change rates required by each shared resource group; a new transformer, critical lighting design requirements, and an upgraded BAS. This project also includes an intense and flexible HVAC design of modular departmental zones to address the ongoing expandability of each group within the suite.

The final product contains approximately 4-6 biological safety cabinets, 6-8 laminar air flow workstations, multiple HEPA fan filtration modules, and 10-12 new NIST Traceable air stations with DDC controls integrated into the hospital central automation control system. New lighting and receptacles (standard and emergency power) are also designed into the 11,114 square foot space. This project meets all clean room requirements with this ISO certified classification.
