Marine Mammal Research Pool Life Support System

Florida Atlantic University, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute

About this Project

OCI Associates, Inc. was responsible for the design of the primary and emergency electrical systems to feed the critical life support systems of the Marine Mammal Research Pool at Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.

The team’s design used the existing infrastructure of a swimming pool to design a state-of-the-art marine mammal tank. The tank’s design includes 400 amp 120/208 volt service, 150 KVA LP generator, transfer switches and electrical panels, a complete grounding system with lightning protection; a pool bonding system, pump, and skid mounted equipment bonding and a ground ring. The facility’s life-support system project had a critical time restraint for project turn-around due to the pool needing to be available to house several pilot whales that had beached near the Institute. The marine mammal tank continues to serve as a research and rehabilitation pool for sick or injured marine mammals.
